Washington and Tehran agreed overnight to a two-week ceasefire, reaching a deal less than two hours before a deadline set by US President Donald Trump for Iran to reopen the strategic Strait of Hormuz or face severe consequences, Polish state news agency PAP reported.
"Poland consistently holds the position that conflicts in the world should be resolved in accordance with the principles of international law, especially the United Nations Charter," the Polish foreign ministry said in a statement.
The deal followed mediation efforts by Pakistan’s army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the Reuters news agency reported.
“Poland therefore welcomes the ceasefire between Iran and the United States," the statement said, adding: "We thank Pakistan and other mediators involved for their diplomatic efforts."
The ministry said the agreement should also include stabilization and guarantees of Lebanon’s territorial integrity as one of the conditions for achieving peace in the Middle East.
"We strongly encourage Israel to accept the Lebanese authorities’ call for direct negotiations to end the conflict,” the statement said, expressing hope that an improved political situation in the region would "ensure the security of energy supplies and key raw materials and create investment conditions for reconstruction and economic growth."
The ministry added that building a security architecture in the region resilient to internal and external threats would require "a lasting diplomatic resolution of Iran’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs, and an end to Iran's support for terrorist organizations that destabilize the region."
Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz on Wednesday welcomed the ceasefire announcement, calling it a "positive sign."
Prime Minister Donald Tusk said Poland would keep its fuel price package in place despite the ceasefire, advocating a cautious approach to energy costs and describing the situation in the Middle East as "still very fragile."
The ceasefire announcement followed more than a month of attacks on Iran by the United States and Israel, as well as retaliatory strikes by Tehran on targets across the Middle East, the PAP news agency reported.
