Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk says his government is working to gather information and influence American decision-making after reports emerged that the Pentagon has cancelled plans to rotate 4,000 troops into the country.

Speaking before a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, Tusk said US allies "must understand" the importance of close military cooperation and an American troop presence in Poland for the security of Poland, Europe and the United States.

The Reuters news agency reported on May 15, citing two anonymous US officials, that the Pentagon had scrapped the planned rotation of an armoured brigade.

Broadcaster CNN, also citing US defence sources, said the move was part of a broader effort to reduce American force levels across Europe.

Separately, on May 1, the Pentagon announced the withdrawal of 5,000 troops from Germany.

Tusk said Poland's Chief of General Staff, Gen. Wiesław Kukuła, was meeting the commander of US forces in Europe, Gen. Alexus Grynkewicz, in Brussels on Tuesday.

Two deputy defence ministers were also holding talks at the White House, the Pentagon and the State Department during a visit to Washington, while Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz is due to speak with the US Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Christopher Mahoney, on Wednesday.

Tusk described Poland as America's "most loyal and effective ally," pointing to its significant investments in US military equipment and its role in securing broader European security.

At a news conference last Friday, following the initial reports, the prime minister had sought to reassure the public, saying the decisions were "logistical in nature" and would not affect Poland's security.
