Poland's Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski has welcomed President Donald Trump's announcement that the United States will send an additional 5,000 troops to Poland, saying the move confirms that the overall US military presence in the country will remain roughly at its current level.

Speaking at a NATO foreign ministers' meeting in Helsingborg, Sweden, on Friday, Sikorski said: "I want to thank President Trump for announcing that the rotation, so the presence of US troops in Poland, will be maintained at roughly the current level."

He also credited others involved in the decision: "I want to thank the president and all those who contributed – our friends in Congress, ambassadors Whitaker and Rose, in NATO and in Poland, and of course all the Polish officials who played their part."

"I think Poland's reputation as a country that takes defence seriously also helps," he said.

On Thursday, Trump posted on Truth Social that the US would send an additional 5,000 troops to Poland, citing his support for Poland's President Karol Nawrocki.

The Helsingborg meeting, which concludes on Friday, is focused on preparations for July's NATO summit in Ankara.

Defence spending and support for Ukraine are among the key topics on the agenda.
