As part of the drills, run by the US Defense Department, an American armoured unit has been deployed to Poland to test the US army’s capacity for a quick military response.
According to public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency, over 500 American soldiers are participating in the exercises, along with Polish and German troops.
Polish Defence Minister Mariusz Błaszczak is set to meet on Tuesday with the United States Secretary of the Army Ryan McCarthy as the exercises are held, IAR reported.
The drills are the second phase of DEFENDER-Europe 20, a U.S.-led multinational training exercise, which had to be modified in response to the coronavirus pandemic.
In the first phase, about 6,000 American and Polish soldiers trained at the Drawsko training ground. Drills took place almost the whole of June.
The Polish defence ministry said last week that precautions would be taken to protect soldiers and the local community from potential COVID-19 infection.
The exercises will end on August 23.
