The Polish government’s information service (CIR) said in a statement that the two heads of government would explore “bilateral and regional issues, challenges for eastern policy and regional security,” the state PAP news agency reported.
European topics are set to include the EU’s resilience, as well as its energy and climate policy, government officials said.
In this connection, “Poland stresses the need for urgent reform of the bloc’s emissions trading scheme (ETS); this system is contributing... to growing energy poverty, especially in Central Europe,” CIR’s statement added.
Challenges for eastern policy
Morawiecki and Kariņš are also expected to discuss eastern policy and regional security, “with a particular focus on the situation in Ukraine and Belarus,” government officials noted.
The meeting comes as the regime of Belarus’ strongman leader Alexander Lukashenko “has been intensifying hybrid-warfare activities against the EU, by engineering illegal migration,” CIR’s statement said.
Meanwhile, “Russia is putting increasing pressure on Ukraine, by building up its military assets near Ukraine’s eastern border,” the Polish government emphasised.
Among bilateral issues, the two PM’s will explore Polish-Latvian cooperation in the field of infrastructure and energy, including under the Three Seas Initiative of European countries between the Black, Baltic and Adriatic Seas.
The initiative’s summit this year will be held in the Latvian capital Riga, CIR’s statement added, as quoted by PAP.
