Andrzej Duda made the remark in the run-up to this month's summit at a media briefing in Warsaw on Monday, Polish state news agency PAP reported.
The president spoke to reporters on the sidelines of a daylong conference with top army commanders.
Bigger NATO presence on eastern flank
He said: “What we plan to achieve at the summit [in Madrid] is we definitely want NATO to boost its presence on the eastern flank ... We want NATO to increase its troop numbers in our part of Europe, that is, on the eastern flank of the alliance."
Duda added that "this means not only Poland, but other eastern-edge countries as well, if their governments see the need for a bigger NATO presence."
Last Friday, Duda made a plea for strengthening NATO’s eastern flank when he spoke at a summit of the Bucharest Nine (B9) group of allies amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The B9 group brings together nine countries on the eastern flank of NATO: Poland, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania and Slovakia.
Last Wednesday, Duda held a phone call on the Ukraine war and NATO’s Madrid summit with US President Joe Biden.
Tuesday is day 111 of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
