Mateusz Morawiecki made the appeal during a meeting with Friedrich Merz, the head of Germany’s opposition CDU party, Polish state news agency PAP reported.
Merz's visit to Poland
Germany's Merz was visiting Poland for a series of meetings with senior politicians in Warsaw, in a bid to smooth out bilateral ties, news outlets reported.
On Wednesday, Merz held talks with Poland’s conservative leader Jarosław Kaczyński, before being hosted by Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski.
He also laid flowers at the 1944 Warsaw Uprising Memorial and the Ghetto Heroes Memorial.
Meeting with PM
On Thursday, the CDU leader met with the Polish prime minister.
Piotr Müller, the spokesman for the Polish government, told reporters that the meeting "focused on geopolitical risks, the events in Ukraine, the military conflict caused by Russia and its consequences.”
He added that Morawiecki and Merz spoke about "the war’s repercussions for energy policy."
In addition, Morawiecki "stated Poland’s opposition to certain German ideas for further European integration, along federalist lines,” Müller said, adding that Poland is "against the European Union having a federal shape."
Another topic during the talks was economic cooperation, according to Müller.
He told the news conference: “With regard to the economy, Poland and Germany have been working together on an increasing scale for years; our economic relations, in terms of resources committed and investments carried out by both sides, are satisfactory; they matter for our bilateral cooperation.”
Weapons for Ukraine and Poland
Meanwhile, Müller said that, according to the Polish government, "Germany’s weapons shipments to Ukraine are insufficient, and the same is true of Berlin’s supplies to Poland to replace equipment delivered to Ukraine.”
Müller told reporters: “The prime minister was open about this; he told Mr. Merz that Poland hopes that Germany will take further steps … and fulfil its pledges.”
Germany has recently come in for some strong criticism from Poland's ruling conservatives for failing to provide modern tanks to Warsaw to replace machines sent to Ukraine, the PAP news agency has reported.
After his meeting with Kaczyński on Wednesday, Merz said: “The war in Ukraine is a big challenge for all of us and I hope the German government will fulfil its obligations, and weapons will be swiftly delivered as part of the exchange ...”
The CDU leader added: “Weapons must be delivered and they must be delivered in the way that the Polish government expects.”
Thursday was day 155 of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
