Mateusz Morawiecki spoke with Kamala Harris at the request of Washington, Polish state news agency PAP reported.
The Polish PM said on Twitter afterwards: “I spoke to Vice President Kamala Harris about the mechanisms of further support for Ukraine, and the problems in the world’s energy sector, which have an impact on inflation in many countries.”
“It is necessary to develop nuclear energy in Poland,” he added.
According to Morawiecki’s office, the Polish PM emphasised that his government “is assessing in detail the possibilities” of developing nuclear energy, “both in terms of building a large nuclear-power station and developing small modular nuclear reactors.”
“Vice President Harris said the US was willing to share its experiences in this regard,” officials added.
The Polish PM’s office also said that “Vice President Harris mentioned her visit to Poland in March and thanked Poland for the enormous involvement of our country in helping Ukraine and for excellent cooperation with many allies.”
Morawiecki’s office added: “PM Morawiecki and Vice President Harris agreed that recent months have seen a further strengthening of the Polish-American strategic partnership. This is evidenced by President Joe Biden’s decision to establish a permanent military presence in Poland.”
'Poland's generosity and leadership'
Meanwhile, the White House said that Harris “recognised Poland’s generosity and leadership in hosting millions of Ukrainian refugees and providing critical humanitarian assistance, while also providing vital security assistance to help the Ukrainian people defend their democracy from Russia’s ongoing aggression.”
The US vice president also “reaffirmed the enduring strength of the U.S.-Polish relationship and efforts to bolster our collective security, including the permanent stationing of the U.S. Army V Corps Headquarters Forward Command Post in Poznan, which President Biden recently announced as the first permanently-stationed U.S. force presence on NATO’s Eastern Flank,” the US officials added.
The White House stated that Harris “also discussed opportunities to enhance bilateral cooperation on civil nuclear power generation in Poland, which would advance European energy security, support global climate solutions, and create thousands of clean energy jobs in both Poland and the United States.”
