Despite the sometimes hostile, especially pre-election, rhetoric between the two states, Germany and Poland are clearly on the same side when it comes to supporting Ukrainians fleeing the war, as statistics from Eurostat reveal.

Eurostat, the European Union's statistical office, has published figures on the current destination of Ukrainian refugees currently staying in the European Union.

The figures are based on the number of non-EU citizens (overwhelmingly Ukrainian) granted temporary protection in each EU country.

Germany leads the way with 28%. Together with Poland's 23%, the two countries are hosting over half the total 4.2 million refugees.

It is striking that there then follows a considerable gap with Czechia in third place with "only" 365 000 refugees hosted. There is then another gap with no countries in the 200 000's. A few countries are hosting between 100 and 200 000 refugees - Romania, Bulgaria, Spain, Italy and Holland.

Despite the political-diplomatic tensions between Germany and Poland, much discussed in international media, the two countries clearly share some core values and aims regarding the war, as evidenced by their humanitarian actions.
