The Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Japan announced via social media that the Japan Meteorological Agency has issued a tsunami warning for Japan’s Pacific coast.
“Please avoid coastal areas and follow the instructions of local authorities,” the embassy added in a post shared around noon local time on Wednesday (early morning in Poland).
After a powerful 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck Russia’s eastern coast, triggering a tsunami warning across the Pacific region, Japan evacuated 4,000 workers from the Fukushima nuclear power plant on Wednesday, July 30 (the same plant that became a symbol of nuclear disaster in 2011). Tsunami alerts were also issued in several other parts of Asia, including China, Indonesia, and Taiwan.
A similar warning was issued by the Consulate General of Poland in Los Angeles, alerting about the tsunami threat for Hawaii and Alaska.
“All Polish citizens in the affected areas should follow the instructions of local authorities. Please monitor tsunami.gov for evacuation alerts and updates,” the latest statement said.
“For Polish citizens in urgent need of consular assistance, an emergency phone line is available at +1 (310) 699-8092,” the official announcement added.
The Embassy of Poland in New Zealand has also issued a warning about unusual strong ocean currents and high waves along the entire coast starting from July 30 at 11:59 PM local time.
“Local authorities advise staying on land and avoiding beaches and shorelines. Exercise caution, monitor official updates, and follow instructions,” diplomats urged.
During a press conference on Wednesday, Polish Foreign Ministry spokesperson Paweł Wroński stated, “There is no information about any Polish citizens being affected by the earthquake off the coast of Kamchatka or the tsunami in the Pacific.”
He confirmed that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is in constant contact with diplomatic and consular posts in the affected regions, including the Polish Embassy in the Philippines (where the threat covers the country’s Pacific coast) and Polish diplomats in Indonesia, where warnings were issued for West Papua, North Maluku, and Gorontalo provinces.
