As we reported earlier, Hungarian Prime Minister Victor Orbán has been threatening to veto EU funding for Ukraine, undermining the union's solidarity in the face of Putin's invasion.

Now the Guardian has reported, that Orbán's allies have met behind closed doors with Republicans in the US to discuss strategies to end US support for Ukraine.

A source close to the Hungarian Embassy told the Guardian that Orbán is confident that a new round of funding will not pass the United States Congress, which is why he is focussing his personal efforts on Europe and Ukraine's accession to the Union.

However, the Guardian also wondered whether Orbán is bluffing with veto threats. Many times in the past he has threatened to veto key EU decisions, only to withdraw and the last minute - and negotiate concessions from the EU in the meantime.

A Guardian columnist, Alexander Hurst, has suggested it is time to call Orbán's bluff and block EU funds to Hungary if necessary.
