Poland's Radosław Sikorski and Japan's Yōko Kamikawa met in Warsaw on Monday, public broadcaster Polish Radio's IAR news agency reported.

The two discussed ways to deepen strategic Polish-Japanese ties, defence assistance to Ukraine and the country's postwar reconstruction, as well as the situation in the Middle East and in the Indo-Pacific region, according to officials.

Sikorski said the government in Warsaw "appreciates Japanese investments in Poland and encourages more such projects," adding that  "hopefully Japan will further open its market to Polish products."

Poland's top diplomat said that besides economic ties, Poland and Japan also worked together in such fields as political dialogue, science and defence.

Both Sikorski and Kamikawa said that the two countries had potential for cooperation in high-tech, and shared similar views on the "fundamental values of the international order," such as democracy, human rights, and respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of nations.

They added this was reflected in "practical cooperation" between Poland and Japan, including "when it comes to assistance for Ukraine."

The Polish foreign minister also said Tokyo had offered to support Poland financially in hosting refugees from Ukraine, adding the proposed figure was "significant."

Kamikawa noted she had on Sunday visited Kyiv, pledging Japan's continued support for Ukraine's war effort against the Russian invasion, including USD 37 million for drone detection systems.

On Saturday, Japan's top diplomat met in Warsaw with Poland's education minister, Barbara Nowacka, and the two discussed Tokyo's support for Ukrainian students attending Polish schools, and pooling experiences in education policy, among other topics.

Monday is day 684 of Russia’s war on Ukraine.

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, launching the largest military campaign in Europe since World War II.
