They are competing for the Golden Highlander’s Axe ('Ciupaga' in Polish), awarded in three categories: traditional, artistically developed, and stylized performances.

The Zakopane Centre for Culture describes the event as "a unique encounter with folk traditions and culture passed down through generations."

According to its website, the International Festival of Highland Folklore is more than a cultural event: "Zakopane, a town with a long-standing artistic heritage, has created a space for the preservation and promotion of the highlanders’ authentic legacy – something that requires particular protection in the face of globalization and mass tourism," it says.

Now in its 56th edition, the International Festival of Highland Folklore in Zakopane is one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious events of its kind.

It runs until August 21.
