Andrzej Duda made the remark in an interview with US broadcaster Fox News, aired on Sunday.

Poland's head of state said that forging a "very close alliance" between Poland and America, and a "very strong Atlantic bond" was "in the interests of Poland, Europe and the United States."

Duda added this would make the continent "more secure" and "free from Russian influence."

The Polish president told Fox News that Russia's February 2022 invasion of Ukraine was "Russian imperialism reborn" and that Poland had spent 4% of GDP on defence last year in response, including buying "state-of-the-art Abrams tanks" and Patriot air defence systems from America.

Duda noted that Poland would preside over the European Union in the first half of 2025, and that Warsaw's "priority will be to forge a stronger Atlantic bond."

"More Europe in the United States, and more United States in Europe," he told Fox News.

Duda said that during the 2016-2020 presidency of Donald Trump Poland and US had "very good relations" and "very close economic ties," including a contract for supplies of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from US to Poland and launching talks on Poland's first nuclear power plant.

The Polish president would not comment on America's upcoming presidential elections, stressing that the choice was "up to the American people," who knew best who would make the best president for their country, Polish Radio's polskieradio24.pl website reported.

Monday is day 698 of Russia’s war on Ukraine.

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, launching the largest military campaign in Europe since World War II.
