An unidentified drone crossed into Lithuania from Belarus on Monday morning, authorities said, prompting police mobilization and a military investigation. The defense minister warned similar incidents could increase as Belarus prepares for autumn exercises.

Police reported the sighting and urged residents not to approach any downed drone and to call 112. The National Crisis Management Center (NKVC) said the drone was observed around 200 meters high and last registered near Vilnius.

“Police have mobilized all forces […] The type of drone is not yet known,” the NKVC said.

Defense Minister Dovilė Šakalienė said details were being clarified after talks with the interior minister and the army commander.

She noted favorable weather for weather balloons used by smugglers to transport goods and said preparations for exercises in Belarus raise the likelihood of incidents, including unintended ones.

“At this moment, the probability of such incidents is higher,” she said.

The Lithuanian Armed Forces are investigating the airspace breach.

On July 10, a drone from Belarus violated Lithuanian airspace. Border guards initially reported an object traveling 50–60 km/h at about 100 meters that resembled a homemade plane.

Šakalienė later confirmed it was a Russian Gerbera decoy drone that imitates Shahed drones to mislead. NATO fighters assigned to Lithuania were ordered to respond, but the mission was canceled after the object fell.

Authorities said the drone posed no threat.
