The accident happened late Sunday evening on the Sigmaringen-Ulm railway line, also known as the Danube Valley Route due to its proximity to the Danube River.

Police in Baden-Württemberg confirmed that mud from the landslide covered the tracks, which caused the train carrying around 100 passengers to derail.

The victims included the train driver, his trainee, and a 70-year-old female passenger. Additionally, 41 others sustained injuries, six of them critically.

The line remains closed as experts work to assess the damage and ensure safety before reopening, following heavy rainfall that led to the landslide.
