Ruginienė, who was social security minister in the old government, has vowed to continue supporting Ukraine and invest in the country's defence while seeking to reduce inequalities, the AFP news agency reported.

Ruginienė, a 44-year-old former trade union leader, now has 15 days to form a Cabinet and win a parliamentary vote of confidence.

"My biggest dream is to stand in front of you again at the end of my mandate and to say that we have been able to accomplished very important work," Ruginienė, a lawmaker with the ruling Social Democratic party, told parliament on Tuesday.

She has previously spoken positively about strengthening ties with Poland and normalising issues concerning the Polish minority in her country.

"Without a doubt, our relationship with Poland—particularly in terms of security and defence—needs to be further deepened and strengthened," Ruginienė told public broadcaster Polish Radio earlier this month.

“I’m glad we have such neighbours. This partnership is ongoing, and I’m fully committed to continuing it,” she said.
