In a post on social media, Rose said Poland “doesn’t need lectures” from its partners but instead requires European allies “to be as strong as she is”.
The diplomat described his recent meeting with Jarosław Kaczyński, the chairman of the right-wing populist Law and Justice party (PiS), as an honour, saying their talks focused on leadership, security and the future of bilateral relations.
Referring to US President Donald Trump, Rose said the partnership between Washington and Warsaw is built on “realism, sovereignty and results” - language that mirrors PiS’s long-standing emphasis on national autonomy and scepticism towards supranational institutions.
Kaczyński remains one of the most influential and polarising figures in Polish politics. Although he holds no formal state office, he has for years exercised decisive control over previous PiS-led governments.
During its time in power, the party repeatedly clashed with the European Union over judicial independence, media freedom and democratic standards.
The meeting with Kaczyński came after earlier talks with members of Poland’s current, more pro-European administration, including Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski and Prime Minister Donald Tusk, leader of the centrist Civic Coalition, which returned to office following last year’s parliamentary elections.
Earlier this week, Rose attended a ceremonial Hanukkah candle-lighting in the lower house of parliament, the Sejm.
The tradition of holding official Hanukkah ceremonies in Poland was introduced in 2006 by the late president Lech Kaczyński - a leading PiS figure and the twin brother of Jarosław Kaczyński - and continued by subsequent presidents, including celebrations held in the Presidential Palace.
Karol Nawrocki, also backed by the right-wing populist Law and Justice party, broke with this long-standing custom by not hosting a Hanukkah candle-lighting at the Presidential Palace, a decision that drew criticism from some politicians in Poland.
