“He is already home, with his family,” Sikorski wrote on social media, thanking all those involved in the operation, including the Danish shipowner.

The sailor was among nine crew members abducted in an armed attack on the gas tanker CGAS Saturn in early December in the Gulf of Guinea, one of the world’s most dangerous regions for maritime piracy. The vessel was sailing under a Portuguese flag to Malabo in Equatorial Guinea, the shipping company said at the time.

Four crew members remained on board following the attack, one of whom suffered minor injuries. The ship later reached safer waters.

Poland’s foreign ministry said it activated established procedures for maritime kidnappings immediately after the incident and set up a dedicated team to coordinate efforts to secure the sailor’s release. Officials declined to provide operational details, citing security concerns.

Pirate attacks in the Gulf of Guinea, which spans the coasts of West and Central Africa, have made the region a persistent high-risk area for commercial shipping.
