Donald Trump has warned that he may impose 10 percent tariffs on countries that support Greenland and send troops to the island.

Earlier, a joint statement was issued by European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

The EU leaders stressed that respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity is a cornerstone of international law and vital for stability in Europe and beyond, including security cooperation in the Arctic through NATO.

They underlined full EU solidarity with Denmark and Greenland, called for continued dialogue with the United States, and warned that tariffs would damage transatlantic relations while Europe remains united in defending its sovereignty.

A separate statement was also issued by EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas.

“China and Russia must be having a field day. They are the ones who benefit from divisions among Allies. If Greenland’s security is at risk, we can address this inside NATO,” she said on Saturday via social media.

“Tariffs risk making Europe and the United States poorer and undermine our shared prosperity,” Kallas noted.

“We also cannot let our dispute distract us from our core task of helping to end Russia’s war against Ukraine,” she added.
