According to Polish Radio’s Brussels correspondent, Beata Płomecka, EU foreign ministers agreed on Monday, 15 December, to tighten sanctions against Russia.
EU ministers approve tougher sanctions on Russia ahead of 2026 package
More than 40 ships of Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet” are set to be added to the blacklist, and sanctions will also target individuals who destabilize situations in EU countries, including GRU officers and Kremlin-aligned operatives abroad who engage in acts of sabotage, subversion, and the spread of pro-Kremlin propaganda.
The restrictions agreed upon by ambassadors are a supplement to the existing sanctions, which were last imposed on Russia by the EU at the end of October.
The full sanctions package, depending on the situation in Ukraine and the course of peace talks, is being prepared for 2026, coinciding with the fourth anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
EU and US leaders convene in Berlin as Kallas cautions against conceding to Russia
As Kaja Kallas warned on Monday, referring to Russia’s demands for the entire Donbas (and also regions it has not yet seized), “the Donbas isn't Putin's end game. If he gets it, he will demand more. We know this from history and we should learn from history.”
Today, discussions on possibilities to end the war in Ukraine will involve not only the foreign ministers of EU countries in Brussels, but also EU leaders during talks scheduled for the afternoon in Berlin.
Alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and US envoys in the German capital, leaders from several countries - including France, the United Kingdom, and Poland, which will be represented by Prime Minister Donald Tusk - will participate in the discussions.
