The centre-right opposition Tisza party leads among decided voters with 53 percent support, compared with 37 percent for Orban’s Fidesz, according to a survey by pollster 21 Institute for the 24.hu news website published on Tuesday.

The poll showed the far-right Mi Hazank (Our Homeland) as the only other party likely to cross the 5-percent threshold required to enter parliament.

Among all respondents, Tisza was backed by 35 percent, up from 34 percent in December, while support for Fidesz rose to 28 percent from 26 percent.

A separate survey by the Publicus Institute published on Monday showed Tisza leading Fidesz by 48 percent to 40 percent among decided voters, with more than 5 percent backing Our Homeland.

That poll found 27 percent of voters undecided, down from 31 percent in December.

Hungary’s general election is scheduled for April 12.

It is expected to have major implications for Europe and its far-right political forces. Orban, a pro-Russian politician and an ally of US President Donald Trump, has frequently clashed with the EU over what the bloc says is the steady erosion of democratic values in Hungary, the Reuters news agency reported.

Tisza, led by Peter Magyar, has pledged to unlock billions of euros in frozen European funds to boost the economy, curb corruption and firmly anchor Hungary in the EU and NATO, according to Reuters.
