President Andrzej Duda told state television TVP on Sunday evening that increased tension in the Middle East had “no impact on the security of Polish people.”

He told the broadcaster in an interview that Poland was “closely monitoring the situation” following Friday’s killing of Iranian Revolutionary Guards commander Qassem Soleimani.

He added that Poland “played no part in this event."

"Poland and the Polish people have a good relationship with Iran,” Duda said. “We had no part in what happened and there are no reports of any danger to Poland or Poles resulting from this event."

He conceded that the situation in the Middle East "could escalate in different directions," state news agency PAP reported.

The president also told TVP that he was convening a special meeting with members of Poland’s government to further discuss the latest developments in the Middle East.

The meeting, known as a Cabinet Council, is scheduled to take place at the presidential palace in Warsaw on Tuesday afternoon.

Meanwhile, NATO ambassadors were expected to gather in Brussels on Monday to discuss the situation in the Middle East at an urgent meeting convened by the head of the Western military alliance, Poland’s PAP news agency reported.

NATO on Saturday decided to suspend its training mission in Iraq amid security concerns following the death of the top Iranian security and intelligence officer.

Poland’s foreign ministry last week condemned an attack on the US embassy in Baghdad.
