Polish president discusses EU border crisis with Slovak leaders

Polish President Andrzej Duda has discussed the security of the European Union's borders with top Slovak officials during a one-day visit to Bratislava, his aides told reporters.

Duda on Tuesday met with the country’s President Zuzana Čaputová, Prime Minister Eduard Heger and parliamentary Speaker Boris Kollár to talk about bilateral ties, regional projects and an escalatinmigrant crisis oPoland’s border with Belarus, which is also the eastern border of the European Union, Polish state news agency PAP reported.

Duda's office said the talks focused on the security situation on the Polish-Belarusian border, the regional Via Carpathia project, energy transformation and the Three Seas Initiative Investment Fund.


"We discussed the most pressing issues at the moment, including the migration problem and the pressure on the Polish border," Duda told reporters at a press conference.

Slovakia's Čaputová tweeted after the talks that "the hybrid attack and abuse of migrants by the Belarus regime are unacceptable."

"Poland has our support," she added.

She also tweeted that she and Duda "talked about the rule of law."

"EU’s common values must be safeguarded and all challenges should be settled in a constructive dialogue," she wrote.

Ahead of the visit, the Polish president's foreign policy adviser Jakub Kumoch told reporters that “Poland and Slovakia are very close partners in the EU, NATO and the Visegrad Group, and they also carry out joint projects as part of the Three Seas Initiative."

Duda was initially expected to arrive in Bratislava on Monday evening, but he was forced to delay and shorten his trip amid the border crisis, the PAP news agency reported.
