"Mateusz Morawiecki, the prime minister of Poland, has offered his condolences to the bereaved families of victims of the train crash which occurred in eastern India on Friday night", Polish state news agency PAP reported.

Rescuers and families searched through mangled train carriages on Sunday for more victims of India's most devastating rail crash in more than two decades, the Reuters agency reported.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who faces an election next year, visited the scene on Saturday to talk to rescue workers. He also inspected the wreckage and met some of the nearly 1,200 injured. The South Eastern Railway has said a preliminary report indicated that the accident was caused by a signal failure.

At least 288 people were killed and nearly 900 were injured in a collision involving two passenger trains and a freight train in the eastern part of the country. Authorities fear that the death toll from the disaster will continue to rise, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.
