“This is not the first time that, together with European leaders, we have decided to visit and support President Sandu and the pro-European camp in Moldova. There is no doubt about how important it is for Poland’s security to maintain Moldova’s pro-European course,” Tusk said during a Wednesday press briefing, according to the Prime Minister’s Office.
Ahead of his flight to Chișinău, where he will join French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz for Moldova’s independence anniversary celebrations, Donald Tusk highlighted the strategic importance of supporting President Sandu’s pro-European and pro-Western initiatives, especially ahead of parliamentary elections on September 28, which face unprecedented interference from Russia.
The Prime Minister also reflected on the recently concluded Cabinet Council with President Nawrocki.
“I am pleased with today’s Cabinet Council. We are looking for common ground with President Nawrocki for the good of Poland,” he emphasized.
“I am glad that today we had the direct opportunity to correct the President on several issues. As he is new to this role, it is my duty to provide him with competent information about the state of Poland,” Tusk added, before turning to energy policy.
“We want, and we must, have cheaper energy. This is not only a matter of household budgets, but of the development of the entire Polish economy. It’s simply the case that onshore wind turbines provide the fastest and most affordable way to meet energy demand,” he said.
The Prime Minister’s Office also released a clip from Tusk’s remarks at the Cabinet Council, in which he highlighted that his team has achieved a noticeable reduction in inflation in Poland, when asked to update the status of his government’s electoral commitments.
Polish PM signals close coordination with president on foreign policy
Tusk also announced plans to meet with President Nawrocki ahead of the new president’s first official overseas trip to the United States, scheduled for September 3.
“The government conducts foreign policy, the President represents the Polish state abroad, which means that the government, when necessary, provides guidance and recommendations to the President,” he stressed, noting that such a recommendation has been prepared for Nawrocki’s upcoming U.S. visit.
Commenting on his relationship with the President regarding foreign policy, Tusk observed that he sees “generally good will,” noting alignment on strengthening relations with the Baltic states.
The Prime Minister emphasized that international cooperation will be “a top priority.”
“The President and I have agreed on regular, discreet, one-on-one contact, and we will coordinate foreign policy with the best intentions,” Tusk concluded.
