The dispute between Poland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, controlled by the ruling Civic Coalition (KO), and the team of newly inaugurated President Nawrocki, backed by the right-wing Law and Justice party (PiS), escalated ahead of their trips to New York for the annual UN General Assembly session, with the politicians traveling separately.

Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski, who implements the government’s foreign policy, was not invited by the Office of the President of Poland to join a joint flight on the presidential plane, which had previously been an informal practice.

Tensions between Poland’s MFA and President Nawrocki’s office escalate

The conflict intensified over the nomination of Bogdan Klich, the chargé d’affaires of the Polish embassy in Washington. Before traveling to the U.S., Marcin Przydacz, Head of the Office of International Policy at the President’s Office, announced that President Nawrocki - like his predecessor President Duda - would not approve Klich’s nomination as Poland’s ambassador to the United States.

Responding to this, Poland’s top diplomat, Radosław Sikorski, explained via social media:

"The President has the constitutional right and duty to appoint or refuse to appoint an ambassador, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, according to the law, has the right to submit a request for such an appointment."

FM Sikorski says he will not allow Polish government to be undermined by President’s office

"I will not allow the government’s competences to be undermined, nor will I allow the Polish diplomatic service to become politicized again," FM Sikorski stressed.

"Almost all Polish diplomatic missions abroad have their heads. They work hard on behalf of Poland’s interests, including managing visits by the President. The only thing some of them lack is his signature on the legally submitted requests," the foreign minister added.

After Przydacz engaged in a Twitter dispute with MFA spokesperson Paweł Wroński, who explained that inviting the Foreign Minister to travel on the presidential plane is a matter of “elegance” in communication between the government and the President’s office, FM Sikorski said:

"Publicly undermining Poland’s representative in Washington during a trip to the U.S. is unprofessional and harmful."

"Regardless of how you decide, I ask you, President of Poland, to bring your collaborators to order," he added.

Poland to participate in UN General Assembly session

According to Poland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski will attend the 80th UN General Assembly in New York from September 22 to 25, holding nearly 20 meetings with foreign officials and UN representatives.

He will present Poland’s position on Russia’s aggression in Ukraine, hybrid warfare, and Poland’s bid to join the G20. President Karol Nawrocki will also participate and deliver a speech on Tuesday.
