Iran’s military said on Thursday it did not fire any missiles toward Turkey after NATO air defences intercepted what Turkish officials described as a missile launched from Iran a day earlier, media reports said.

"The Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran respect the sovereignty of the neighbouring and friendly country, Turkey, and deny any missile launch toward that country’s territory,” the General Staff of Iran’s Armed Forces said in a statement, according to reports.

Turkey's defence ministry said on Wednesday that a ballistic missile fired from Iran toward Turkish airspace—after passing over Syria and Iraq—was destroyed by NATO air and missile defence systems over the eastern Mediterranean, the Reuters news agency reported.

The incident appeared to mark the first time NATO forces have intercepted an Iranian missile travelling toward a member state's airspace since the Middle East conflict escalated over the weekend, according to US broadcaster CNN.

Poland on Sunday condemned attempts to widen the conflict in the Middle East, urging all sides to exercise maximum restraint and respect international law.
