Polish PM to discuss global security at EU meeting in Cyprus

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk is set to travel to Cyprus on Thursday to take part in an informal meeting of European Union leaders, where discussions will focus on international security, including the impact of the war in the Middle East, his office said.

EU leaders will be welcomed on Thursday evening by Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides in the coastal resort of Ayia Napa.

Tusk is also scheduled to meet with European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen, followed by talks between EU leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Discussions among EU leaders will continue on Friday morning in the capital Nicosia, and are expected to conclude around midday.

The agenda includes a meeting with European Parliament President Roberta Metsola and a working session of the European Council.

According to the Polish government, key topics will include the war in Ukraine, developments in the Middle East and the energy crisis.

Leaders are also expected to discuss preparations for the EU's next long-term budget for 2028-2034.

Later on Friday, Tusk will take part in a working session involving EU leaders and the presidents of Egypt, Syria, Lebanon and Jordan.

Cyprus holds the six-month rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union until June 30.
