More passengers for Polish rail carrier

State-owned Polish railway company PKP Intercity has seen passenger numbers soar, carrying 22.8 million people in the first six months of this year.

The figure is 1.3 million up on the same period in 2018 and marks the best January-to-June result since 2009.

CEO Marek Chraniuk said in a statement: “The first half of this year was very successful for a number of reasons, including good performances during the winter holidays and the early May [public] holidays.”

He added: “This is a very good sign for the second half of the year. We are hoping that 2019 as a whole will likewise see an increase in passenger numbers” compared to previous years.

PKP Intercity offers services connecting all major Polish cities, and runs Poland’s fleet of high-speed Pendolino trains.

The most popular route during the first half of this year was between the capital, Warsaw, and the southern city of Kraków, followed by services between Warsaw and the coastal city of Gdańsk.
