Under the agreement, the three countries will strive to upgrade Ukraine’s gas connection with Poland.

The memorandum was signed by US Energy Secretary Rick Perry, Poland’s Secretary of State for Strategic Energy Infrastructure, Piotr Naimski, and the Secretary of the National Security and Defence Council of Ukraine, Oleksandr Danyliuk.

Perry said during the signing ceremony that American liquefied natural gas (LNG) would reach Ukraine via Poland and could protect Kiev against restrictions in Russian gas supplies.

Perry said the US was helping Warsaw reduce its dependence on Russian gas and supported Poland's aspirations to become a hub that exports LNG to its neighbours.

For that to happen, new infrastructure between Poland and Ukraine was needed, Perry added.

Polish state-run oil and gas company PGNiG in June announced the signing of an agreement with US company Venture Global LNG to buy an additional 1.5 million tonnes of LNG per year as part of efforts to diversify supplies.
