Among the main contributors to the upward trend are the soaring prices of food & drink, energy and petrol. Year to year, food grew more expensive by 8.6% while energy and fuel by 14.3% and 32.9%, respectively. In month-to-month terms, prices rose by 0.9% on average.

The government has announced plans to introduce additional measures to alleviate the inflationary burden, including lowering VAT on fuels from 23% to 8%.

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki is expected to announce more additions to the country's anti-inflationary package on Tuesday, government spokesperson Piotr Müller said on Saturday. The measures could be extended if inflation continues to surge, Müller told private radio RMF FM.

Poland's inflation has consistently been among the highest within the European Union over the last two years. The Polish Central Bank has recently raised the interest rate to 2.5%, and signalled there might be further rises to come. (mo)
