Poland’s ruling party to decide on Cabinet changes after tax reform setbacks

Senior politicians with Poland’s governing Law and Justice (PiS) party gathered on Monday to discuss possible changes in the government after what some say was poor handling of a recent tax reform by officials, the state PAP news agency reported.

The meeting began in Warsaw at noon and was expected to produce an announcement of new appointments.

Law and Justice leader Jarosław Kaczyński recently told reporters that those responsible for the tax reform “on the political and semi-political level didn’t quite handle their responsibilities.”

He added: “Maybe it was due to a lack of sufficient qualifications, maybe also due to a lack of goodwill.”

Kaczyński, who is a deputy prime minister, also said at the time that "those responsible will face consequences," according to the PAP news agency.

Sources within the ruling party were cited as saying that personnel changes were likely to be approved at Monday’s meeting.

Finance minister to lose job?

Finance Minister Tadeusz Kościński and his deputy Jan Sarnowski could both lose their jobs over what has been described as chaos surrounding the tax reform, the Polish state news agency reported.

Potential candidates to succeed Kościński include Development and Technology Minister Piotr Nowak, according to unofficial sources.

Media outlets have also mentioned Deputy Prime Minister and Agriculture Minister Henryk Kowalczyk as a possible replacement.

However, Kowalczyk has ruled himself out of contention, saying in a media interview at the weekend that he was "not considering such an option.”

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said last week that "there were certain irregularities” in the way the tax reform was carried out.

Speaking to reporters in the southern town of Tarnów, Morawiecki said on Friday that "on the one hand, instances of negligence have to be fixed in such cases, and on the other, you have to think about the consequences."

Morawiecki last month said the government would make alterations to a package of new tax rules to increase citizens' gains from his ruling conservatives’ wide-ranging Polish New Deal programme.

He at the time hailed the tax reform as a set of "unprecedented tax cuts, the biggest in the history of the Republic of Poland."
