The move was announced by Climate and Environment Minister Anna Moskwa, Polish state news agency PAP reported.
Moskwa told reporters after the Cabinet meeting: “Today the government approved a bill that sets a guaranteed price for coal on the Polish market.”
She added: “The guaranteed price for individual customers is PLN 966.60. It’s the average price from last year, according to the Central Statistical office (GUS)."
Under the programme, households will buy coal from importers for no more than PLN 966.60 per tonne, while the remaining part of the price will be covered by the government, reporters were told.
The system applies to households, cooperatives and housing associations that use coal for heating, Moskwa said.
“Each household, each home will be allowed to buy three tonnes of coal at the guaranteed price,” she added.
The government has allocated PLN 3 billion (EUR 645 million) for the programme, according to Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki’s office.
The initiative is designed to protect customers from the effects of rising prices of coal, caused chiefly by Russia's attack on Ukraine, the government said.
