The vessel, named “Lech Kaczyński” after Poland’s late president, carried around 70,000 tons of LNG, or roughly 100 million cubic meters of volatile natural gas from the United States. This is equivalent to the average weekly natural gas consumption of all households in Poland.

The vessel is the first of eight gas carrier ships chartered by Poland’s state-owned PGNiG oil and gas company from Orlen, owned and operated by Norwegian company Knutsen, and built by Hyundai Heavy Industries in Ulsan, South Korea as part of Poland’s drive to wean off Russian raw materials.

The second vessel is due to set sail to the United States this year, with two more vessels delivered in 2024, and another four in 2025.

Poland has received a total of 219 LNG deliveries. The largest number came from Qatar (116) and the United States (83). The company also took deliveries from Norway, Nigeria, Trinidad and Tobago, as well as Egypt. LNG supplies cover approximately one-third of Poland's natural gas demand.
