Polish retail sales 2.7% down y/y in August: stats office

Retail sales in Poland went down by 2.7 percent in August at constant prices compared with the same month a year earlier, the country’s statistics office reported on Thursday.

Sales of food, beverages and tobacco products decreased by 10 percent last month in year-on-year terms, and those of newspapers and books fell by 8.4 percent, the state-run Statistics Poland (GUS) agency said.

Meanwhile, sales of furniture, household appliances and consumer electronics went down by 2.7 percent, while those of clothing and shoes increased 1.6 percent, according to Statistics Poland.

In terms of current prices, retail sales last month were 3.1 percent higher than in August 2022, Statistics Poland said.

In month-on-month terms, retail sales in August were 2.8 percent higher than in July, the statistics office also reported.
