Polish jobless rate second-lowest in EU, at 2.9% in January: Eurostat

Unemployment in Poland was a modest 2.9 percent in January, the second-lowest rate in the 27-nation European Union, the bloc’s statistics agency has reported.

Malta boasted the lowest jobless rate in the bloc in January, at 2.6 percent, while the Czech Republic trailed Poland in third place, with 3 percentaccording to the Eurostat agency.

Meanwhile, Spain had the highest seasonally-adjusted jobless rate in the EU, at 11.6 percent, and Greek unemployment was the second-highest at 10.4 percent, according to the latest available data.

Eurostat reported last week that the EU average for January was 6 percent, stable compared with December.

Poland's statistics office (GUS), which uses a different methodology, reported last month that the Polish jobless rate rose to 5.4 percent in January, from 5.1 percent in December.
