The United States has slapped tariffs ranging from 10% to 41% on imports from nearly 70 countries and the EU, most set at 15%, President Donald Trump said after the levies took effect at midnight.

“IT’S MIDNIGHT!!! BILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN TARIFFS ARE NOW FLOWING INTO THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!” Trump wrote on his social-media platform.

ABC News reported that Canada, Washington’s largest trading partner, faces a 35% duty, while Brazil, the top coffee supplier, is hit with 40%.

The White House said rates were mainly based on each country’s trade deficit with the United States. Under an agreement reached with the EU last week, its exports will be charged 15%.

Yale University researchers estimate the measures will cost the average U.S. household an additional $2,400 this year.
