Four other crew members remained on board, one of whom sustained minor injuries and is receiving medical care, while the vessel has reached safer waters, the shipping company said.

The Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) has set up a dedicated team to coordinate the government’s response and ensure the safe return of its citizen.

MFA spokesperson Maciej Wiewiór said the ministry was alerted immediately after the attack and activated established procedures for handling maritime kidnappings.

For security reasons and the well-being of the hostages, officials declined to provide further operational details.

The Gulf of Guinea, a key maritime region along the coasts of West and Central Africa, has seen a rise in pirate attacks on commercial vessels in recent years, making it one of the world’s most high-risk areas for shipping.
