Polish mining giant KGHM has signed a historic cooperation agreement with the Sagamok Anishnawbek First Nation regarding the development of the Victoria copper-nickel mine in Ontario, the company has announced.
The agreement also guarantees Sagamok Anishnawbek participation in environmental protection efforts linked to the project. The community, home to more than 3,400 people along Lake Hurons northern shore, is party to the 1850 Robinson-Huron Treaty and maintains strong cultural and linguistic ties to the land.

The deal outlines terms for employment, training, business collaboration, knowledge sharing, and land access, ensuring long-term cooperation throughout the mine’s lifecycle—from construction to closure.

“This is an important step in the development of our Canadian Victoria Project,” KGHM Polska Miedź CEO Andrzej Szydło said on Monday. “It’s a further example of our commitment to dialogue and good neighborly relations wherever we operate.”

Representing Sagamok Anishnawbek, Chief Angus Toulouse signed the agreement alongside KGHM International LTD. officials, including CEO Marek Bednarz, Vice President Michał Jezioro, and Canadian General Manager Steve Dunlop.

Located 35 kilometers west of Sudbury, the Victoria Project is set to become an underground copper and nickel mine with an estimated 14-year operational lifespan.
