The announcement came during a ceremony at the 32nd Tactical Air Base in Łask, central Poland, marking the formal induction of the country's first three F-35 fighter jets into the armed forces.

Speaking at the event, US Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security Thomas DiNanno said Poland would be eligible for another USD 4 billion under the Foreign Military Financing (FMF) programme, through which the United States provides loans and grants to allies and partners for the purchase of US-made military equipment.

Poland last secured a USD 4 billion FMF loan agreement in July 2025.

In comments to Poland's PAP news agency, DiNanno confirmed that the newly announced amount would increase the total financing available to Poland under the programme to USD 20 billion.

He said the funds could be used to purchase additional US military equipment, including further F-35 fighter jets.

Asked about the financing after the ceremony, Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz linked the potential loan to Poland's plans to acquire additional fifth-generation fighter aircraft.

"Poland will receive another opportunity to use Foreign Military Financing, which is, in a sense, an American version of SAFE," he said, referring to the European Union's defence financing instrument.

"We have had an American SAFE for a long time," he added, noting that both programmes are based on borrowing under specific financing terms to support defence procurement.

"It is a good opportunity, and we will certainly consider it. If the armed forces have the need and the financial conditions are right, it is worth taking advantage of," Kosiniak-Kamysz said.

Poland has used FMF financing primarily to accelerate military modernisation programmes and help fund existing contracts with US defence suppliers, the PAP news agency reported.

The country has so far borrowed around USD 15 billion through the programme, it said.

According to public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency, Poland has in recent years used US loans and guarantees to help finance the purchase of equipment such as Patriot air defence systems, HIMARS rocket launchers, Abrams tanks and F-35 jets.
