Poland's 2023 cinema attendance figures were unveiled by Helios, a chain of multiplex theatres.

Polish cinemas sold a total of 50.5 million tickets last year, a rise of 16% on 2022, the Parkiet website reported on Thursday.

The figure includes around a million admissions for "non-movie events," such as broadcasts of sporting events, opera plays and theatre plays, according to officials.

Sales of film tickets totalled 48.5 million, worth PLN 920 million (EUR 211.5 million), industry experts estimated.

Poland's 2023 box office was led by the Hollywood film Barbie (2.8 million tickets sold) and the US-UK biopic Oppenheimer (third with 1.9 million), like in most countries, while US animated film Puss in Boots: The Last Wish came second (2.4 million), Parkiet reported.

Poland's 2024 Oscars entry The Peasants came fourth (1.8 million).
