The Polish minister of agriculture and rural development Czesław Siekierski took part in, among others, a panel discussion on promoting sustainable production, organised as part of the International Green Week fair in the German capital.

He stressed that transition to sustainable production must be properly compensated for agricultural producers, and that the profitability of agricultural production is a prerequisite for the success of the transformation of food systems and ensuring food security,

“Climate action is necessary, but it must not lead to a decline in agricultural productivity and the consequent inability to provide food for people, especially those already affected by hunger,” Siekierski said.

The ministers adopted conclusions to their meeting on Saturday, pledging to “continue the transformation toward sustainable, resilient agriculture and food systems,” as well as to “strive to reduce the negative impact of agriculture and food production on the environment, climate and biodiversity, and increase its positive impact.”

The ministers also said their aim was to “promote healthful food consumption choices, healthy diets, and reduce food loss and waste,” in addition to “promoting sustainable livestock production management practices to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the agricultural sector.”

“Promote effective management of water, soil and fertilizers, and supporting agricultural research and innovation,” were also named among the key challenges for the global agriculture sector.

The International Green Week fair runs from 19 to 28 January 2024
