Three officers were injured when a peaceful protest outside a police station in Konin, central Poland, turned into a riot on Sunday evening, state news agency PAP reported.

The gathering took place after a policeman shot and killed a 21-year-old man during a chase in the town on Thursday.

Prosecutors have opened an investigation into the case.

Meanwhile, protesters on Sunday shouted offensive slogans, kicked police shields and threw bottles and stones at officers, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.

After firing warning shots, the police dispersed a crowd of about 100 that had gathered on the site.

Mayor Piotr Korytkowski appealed to the crowd for calm.
