The day aims to strengthen interest in science and research, and inspire people to follow in the footsteps of eminent Polish academics and experts.
The date picked for the celebration – February 19 – is the day that famous astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus was born.
Copernicus (1473–1543) was a Renaissance polymath who came up with the then-revolutionary theory that the Sun, rather than the Earth, is at the centre of the solar system.
Poland today has 81,500 researchers who work in 645 facilities, and a total of 1.2 million students, state news agency PAP reported, citing government statistics.
