Education Minister Przemysław Czarnek said: “Students were not able to acquire as much knowledge as they would have if they had been studying normally” and attending classes in person rather than remotely.

Czarnek said students preparing for next year’s matura final school exams would be required to learn 20 to 30 percent less.

The exams are key in determining Polish teenagers’ educational and professional prospects, and are also a social rite of passage.

Polish schools and universities have switched to distance learning amid an epidemic that has killed over 12,000 people throughout the country.

Poland on Friday reported 22,464 new coronavirus infections and 626 more deaths, bringing its total number of cases to 819,262 and fatalities to 12,714.
