Meanwhile, the easing of a swathe of coronavirus restrictions on daily life has caused a rise in road accidents, public broadcaster Polish Radio reported.

At the same time, regular blood donors are starting to head off on their summer vacations.

The director of the National Blood Centre, Małgorzata Lorek, said that it is not possible to stock up for the holiday season, when there is usually a shortage of supplies, because the same amount of blood is being given out to patients as is being supplied by donors.

Shopping malls, DIY stores, museums and art galleries around Poland were allowed to reopen in early May amid a fall in fresh COVID cases, while all the country's pupils are due to return to traditional on-site classes on May 29.
