The recipients, eight children of soldiers and two of a firefighter, will be getting assistance tailored to their needs until they reach maturity, officials told reporters.

The scholarships aim to help with attaining knowledge and developing interests, regular psychological assistance and educational support, as well as financial aid and preparation to enter the labour market, the Polish president's office said.

As the children received their scholarship diplomas at a ceremony in the presidential palace in Warsaw on Tuesday, Duda said: “There is an unwritten rule whereby some people serve the public, they serve the state, which is sometimes risky, but they are remembered and are not alone afterwards."

He added: "A country must remember its fallen servicemen and women, its soldiers—those who gave their lives in the line of duty while serving the public.”

'You have a right to pursue your dreams'

The first lady told the scholarship recipients: “You have a right to pursue your dreams, while we, adults, have a duty to create the best possible conditions for you to realise those dreams.”

The scholarships are provided through a nongovernmental charity called Dorastaj z nami (Grow up with us), which aims to help the children of soldiers, police officers, firefighters and other law enforcement personnel who died or suffered severe injuries on missions abroad or while performing their duties inside the country.

Since last year, such assistance has also been available to the children and families of healthcare workers who lost their lives while fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, the PAP news agency reported.
