The woman’s body was found on Sunday morning by a passer-by in a park near the sea coast. It bore marks of violence, Poland’s state PAP news agency reported on Monday.

The police launched an investigation and hours after the discovery of the body, a 20-year-old Maltese citizen was arrested on suspicion of murder, according to the ANSA news agency.

Police told the timesofmalta.com website that the victim, identified as Paulina Dembska, probably had “no connection” to the suspect and the murder “could have been a random act,” PAP reported.

According to timesofmalta.com, the man, identified as Abner George Aquilina, was arrested after he entered a nearby church and raised a commotion inside, drawing police attention. Aquilina appeared to be in possession of items linking him to the crime. He is now being held at a mental health facility, the website added.

As timesofmalta.com also reported, two years ago Aquilina had applied for a license to be a private guard and bouncer.

A police spokesman said he could not confirm reports of rape, adding that the victim was wearing some clothes, the website said.

The cause of Paulina Dembska’s death still has to be officially established, but the police spokesman said the indication was that she had been murdered, PAP reported.
