Many of the more than 1 million refugees who have fled to Poland during Russia's war against Ukraine will be looking for a job, and the Polish labour market is ready to provide them with employment opportunities amid workforce shortages, according to a newspaper.

Before Russia invaded Ukraine last month, Poland was home to some 1 million to 1.5 million Ukrainian workers. Now the country is set to accept hundreds of thousands more, the Puls Biznesu newspaper has reported.

Unemployment in Poland was a modest 2.8 percent in January, the second-lowest rate in the 27-nation European Union, the bloc’s statistics agency has reported.

Poland can offer jobs to many newcomers from Ukraine, though the exact number of positions that can be filled remains unknown, according to Puls Biznesu.

Estimates indicate that anywhere from 400,000 to 600,000 jobs are currently available throughout the country.

Meanwhile, the influx of Ukrainian workers is expected to benefit the Polish economy in the long term, adding some 0.2 to 0.3 percentage points to the country's GDP growth next year and helping bring down inflation, according to the newspaper.
